Patrick Mahomes says he’ll play Sunday vs. Bills in AFC title game as he's out of concussion protocol
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is out of concussion protocol and expects to play in the AFC championship game on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, he announced Friday.
“I just got out of the protocol,” Mahomes said. “The week has been a bunch of testing, a bunch of different things to make sure I’m good to go and there’s no lingering effects or anything like that.
“Everything’s been good and I went through what the three or four different doctors have said. Everything’s looked well and I’m out of it now.”
Mahomes was sidelined during the Chiefs’ divisional-round win over Cleveland on Sunday after taking a hit to the head on a running play. The concussion he suffered forced him into the league’s mandated protocol.
Mahomes has practiced every day this week, albeit in a limited capacity Wednesday and Thursday. He still took the majority of snaps.
Mahomes says he’s not feeling any symptoms and is excited to join his teammates this weekend.
“You want to be out there, but you have to go through the protocol and do everything the right way,” Mahomes said. “You have to look at it long-term as much as you look at it short-term, and talking to all the doctors and going through the testing, we have the belief there will be no lingering effects and I’ll be able to go out there and be myself and be who I am every single week.”
Mahomes is also battling a toe injury that he suffered against Cleveland, but says he’s feeling better there, too.
“The next day it was very sore but every single day since then it’s gotten a lot better,” Mahomes said. “Luckily for me, it wasn’t as bad as it looked and it’s feeling a lot better.”
