Packers interim coach Joe Philbin fires longtime Mike McCarthy assistant Winston Moss after leadership tweet
Green Bay Packers interim head coach Joe Philbin has fired linebackers coach Winston Moss.
The team announced the news Tuesday evening.
“We thank Winston for his contributions to the Packers over the past 13 years,” Philbin said in the statement. “We hope the best for Winston and his family moving forward.”
Did Moss’ tweet lead to his departure?
The news comes after Moss tweeted earlier Tuesday about leadership in Green Bay.
Ponder this… what Championship teams have are great leadership! Period! It’s not the offensive guru trend, it’s not the safe trend. Find somebody that is going to hold #12 and everybody in this building to a #LombardiStandard! Period! #losingsucks!

Moss beat the team to the news, thanking Twitter for his departure.
The Packers have informed me that there letting me go. #thankstwitter!

“I have serve [sic] the Packers with all my heart and soul,” Moss later wrote. “I’ve given it my all. No regrets!”
High stakes for Philbin
Philbin took over in Green Bay after the team fired 13-year head coach Mike McCarthy on Sunday.
Moss joined the Packers with McCarthy in 2006 as linebackers coach and was an associate head coach for McCarthy since 2007.
This is Philbin’s first year back in Green Bay after serving as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2007-11.
With four games remaining in the season, Philbin has what amounts to a tryout for a full-time head coaching position with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. Cutting somebody loyal to the previous regime comes as little surprise considering what’s at stake.
