Owners of reimagined Killearn golf club share price of membership; golfers react
The Killearn Club shared its new golf membership plan Friday in an email to previous members, touting its newly-renovated course, premier practice facilities and cutting edge golf technology that will "restore Tallahassee's landmark golf and social experience."
The three-tier membership levels, however, are expected to be the highest of any golf club in Tallahassee and include initiation fees from $15,000 to $75,000.
Monthly dues also range from $500 to $1,100.
The club will feature the 18-hole Camellia Course, 9-hole Clover Course, and a 18,000-square foot clubhouse, including a lengthy list of amenities. Pricing, according to the release, is applicable to the first 200 members and subject to change.
Judging by the reaction from previous members and the community across social media, the prices caught many off guard.
"As a member in good standing when the course closed, I am very disappointed," Joel Hagans posted on Facebook. "I bought a home close to the course because it is my favorite course. Now I’d have to sell my home to pay the fee to join."
David Cummings, who attended and played golf at Lincoln High (1998 graduate) and is an Atlanta-based tech entrepreneur, purchased the club for $2.6 million March of 2022.
In a 2022 interview with the Tallahassee Democrat, Cummings, who grew up near the course and often played it, described the purchase as a “desire to give back and find a passion project.”
He also said, "We are trying to make something that’s really fun to play and really maintainable and something that the neighborhood can really enjoy having as an asset. From the amenities side, there will be a heavy emphasis on families and year-around activities. We want this to be the go-to-spot for families in the area.”
Previously, the club was semi-private and had close to 400 members. However, the new venue will be private and membership driven.
The Democrat reached out to Cummings for comment.
The newspaper, prior to Friday's email that was shared with the Democrat, has a previously scheduled interview with Cummings on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
"This is not what the members were promised when we voted to sell the course to the new organization," posted Ricky Bell, whose two sons (Parker Bell/Florida and Taylor Bell/Florida A&M) are accomplished collegiate golfers.
"My boys started young at this neighborhood course, and enjoyed the experience, it paid off for them, they are both division 1 golfers. I see no option for junior golfers to join, I guess no interest in growing the game……sad."
Closed since the fall of 2022, the Club's opening date was not announced in its email. It's also not known if other pricing will be available.
Jeff Sammons said he believes Tallahassee can sustain "one club like Killearn." However, he also believed "very few residents near the course" will be able to justify the expense. Killearn Estates has nearly 4,000 properties, making it one of Tallahassee’s largest subdivisions.
"There are enough people around here that will pay for the 'elite' status of membership," Sammons posted on Facebook. ".... it'll probably be successful being what it will be."
Mike Moody posted on the Tallahassee Golf Community Facebook page that he thought the pricing was fair.
"This is a fair price for what Killearn has done," Moody said. "It's not that much money compared to larger cities. This facility is top quality."
Here's a look at The Killearn Club's new membership tiers
The new membership levels feature Clover ($15,000 initiation fee), Camellia ($25,000) and Ambassador ($75,000). The Clover level offers golf only on the new 9-hole course.
Initiation pricing also features payment installments over five years for members under 40 years old. Members older than 40 must pay the initiation fee in full. Ownership also included an "exclusive offer" for former KCC members that said $1,000 will be taken off the initiation fee for every five years (capped at $5,000).
In addition to monthly dues, pricing also includes $25 for golf carts and a $150 guest fee (guests are are limited to one round per quarter).
Nick Graganella, whose father Jimmy headlined Killearn’s previous ownership group, lives on the course and is a past investor and club champion.
Graganella, a successful young executive and former Florida State baseball player, describes himself as “big of a supporter (of Killearn) as you’ll find.” However, he believes “the younger generation was an afterthought” and many won’t be able to afford Killearn’s membership tiers.
“I want to be part of this more than just about anyone,” said Graganella, 32, who is a member at Seminole Legacy Golf Club and Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville, Georgia. He said his memberships combined are less than Killearn’s price points.
“But even if I can find a way to make it work with two young kids, one of which loves golf mind you,” Graganell added “Who will I play with? Who will my wife and kids socialize with?
“I understand they built a great product so far and want to make it better with a full club experience. But at those price points, I am not sure Tallahassee supports it. I know my age bracket just can’t swing it and I am deeply disappointed about that.”
In its email, The Killearn Club said members can expect an enriching golf experience.
"Our new membership plans have been carefully crafted with your needs in mind, and they are designed to ensure the long-term sustainability and health of the club," the release said "We have developed these plans to offer you exceptional value and an unparalleled golf experience."
