OU women's gymnastics: Faith Torrez's bar routine goes through big change to 'show stopper'

NORMAN — Faith Torrez’s sophomore season got off to a strong start last week.

In top-ranked OU’s win over a trio of top-11 teams, Torrez won the all-around title with a career-high 39.600.

She won the individual title on the balance beam with a 9.95 and finishing second in the bars at 9.95.

This week, the Sooners are hoping for another strong performance as they take on No. 2 Utah, No. 5 LSU and No. 12 UCLA at the Sprouts Farmer’s Market Collegiate Quad in West Valley City, Utah.

Torrez competed in the all-around three times last season but has made what’s expected to be a season-long move into an all-around spot this season.

She also made a significant change in her bar routine,

“Bars has been killer,” Sooners coach K.J. Kindler said. “That was a brand-new routine for her and she killed it. I’m not surprised by her growth at all. I expect when you go from your freshman to sophomore year, you’re just wiser and she’s definitely stronger too than she was last year walking through that door.”

Torrez added a single-bar release move on the high bar to her routine.

“That’s a show-stopper,” Kindler said. “It’s huge. It’s high. When I say huge, I mean, it’s high, it’s far, she has all this swing out of it and she’s controlling it. It’s a big difference from what last year’s routine was.”

Ahead of Saturday’s meet, Torrez spoke with The Oklahoman about her bar routine change and more:

Q: How do you feel like the first meet went?

A: It went really well. It was a great meet to get the ball rolling for the season, which is really good.

Your bar routine has changed significantly from last season. How has that transition gone?

I worked all summer for it. It was brand new. I felt so confident because we’d worked on it so long so it was really fun to go out there and show it for the first time.

What other changes have you made this year?

The bars was probably the biggest change for me. I also changed my beam dismount which was really good for me because I went back and forth last year so to have a consistent dismount is really good. Me and K.J. talked about it a little bit. I never really tried any other dismounts so we kind of had an open, clean slate and so she talked about the gainer dismount, which I had never tried before. All summer, we were practicing it and I think it’s really great to have a consistent dismount like that.

What’s it been like taking more of a leadership role this season, even as a sophomore?

I think it’s great to have such a big senior class and even just upperclassmen in general to look up to and lean on. We can talk to them about a lot of things because they motivate us every day in the gym. The freshmen, they work so hard, it’s really great. It’s a different feeling seeing them compete for the first time. Everybody would say that about me and Ava (Siegfeldt) last year, but actually experiencing it was different. So proud of them. They worked so hard and it was so great. It was fun.
