OU softball pitching staff shows 'we're human' in Sooners' opening weekend at Love's Field

NORMAN — Going into last weekend’s action, OU softball’s pitching had been dominant.

The Sooners had a 0.73 ERA, with Karlie Keeney, Paytn Monticelli and SJ Geurin each having giving up no runs.

But the weekend got off to a rough start with two Miami (Ohio) home runs in the top of the first of the opener, then Keeney got touched up for back-to-back-to-back home runs later in the game before OU walked the game off.

Kelly Maxwell struggled in two of her three outings, including in the start in Sunday’s eventual 7-5 loss to Louisiana.

“I don’t think they had the best weekend,” Sooners coach Patty Gasso said. “And they’ll readily admit that to you. I don’t know, I do feel like there was a little bit of pressure on everybody, really. They pitchers felt it. It’s uncharacteristic for them to give up all those home runs and give up runs, period, at times. Again, we’re human.”

Here’s a look at what else we learned about the Sooners last week:

Sooners learning how Love’s Field plays

With the rush to get ready for Friday’s opener, the Sooners had to use the weekend to get used to how the stadium plays — how the ball bounces on the infield, carries in the outfield and more.

“It looks like in right field it shoots straight out,” centerfielder Jayda Coleman said. “If you hit a pop fly over there it’s gonna keep carrying. But that’s really the only big thing I’ve seen. And if it gets like over the little hangover thing (awning), it starts blowing.”

Coleman said she was looking forward to practicing on the field to get a better feel.

While the dimensions at Love’s Field are the same as Marita Hynes Field, the outfield wall at the new stadium is a foot taller.

“I’ll have to run and jump,” Coleman said. “I will have to run up and jump. Way cooler (than at Marita Hynes).”

One thing Gasso wasn’t happy about was Alynah Torres’ walk-off two-run double in Friday’s 8-0, five-inning win over Liberty getting wedged under the outfield wall.

“That’s absolutely not appropriate,” Gasso said. “So we’ve got to fix that. And a few things if you have a new house and you see, ‘OK, wait a minute, we’ve got to move that, fix that.’ There’s a few of those things that we found out (Friday). But it’s beautiful. It’s wonderful for fans. It’s wonderful for a team to get that kind of energy off of the fans.”

Patty Gasso not an advocate of the safety bag

One of the biggest plays of Sunday’s loss came in the fifth inning when Ella Parker was called out at first base on a play that would’ve at least tied the game if not given the Sooners the lead.

Review confirmed the call, though, as though the first baseman was pulled off the base by the throw, Parker did not touch first base.

The play renewed calls for the addition of a safety base — an additional first base on the outside of the baseline for the runner to use while the fielder takes the inside base.

Gasso said the play doesn’t change her feelings on the change.

“I’m not an advocate for the safety base,” Gasso said. “It is what it is. You just get caught up in the moment, just trying to get here.”
