OU football secures commitment from Michael Hawkins, four-star 2024 QB recruit

NORMAN — The OU football team secured a commitment from four-star quarterback Michael Hawkins on Saturday.

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect, Hawkins is rated by ESPN as the eighth-best quarterback in the Class of 2024. The McKinney, Texas, native chose OU over TCU.

Hawkins becomes the Sooners' second 2024 commit. He joins Jeremiah Newcombe, a four-star cornerback who committed on March 25.

Now that he has committed to OU, Hawkins is set to follow in the footsteps of his father, Michael Hawkins Sr.

Hawkins Sr. played cornerback for OU as a freshman in 2002 and showed promise. He recorded four tackles in six appearances and even returned his lone interception for a 45-yard touchdown in a game against UTEP.

Hawkins Sr. left OU following his freshman season to play for the Arena Football League’s Dallas Desperados. He then got selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft and ultimately retired in 2009.

Unlike his father, Hawkins will play quarterback for OU. The consensus four-star prospect has good composure in the pocket, and he’s also capable of using his legs to extend plays.

Those skills were showcased during Hawkins’ junior season at Allen High School in Allen, Texas. He threw for 2,024 yards, 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions.

Hawkins is the latest result of OU’s efforts to bring in more quarterback depth.

The Sooners added five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, who’s expected to redshirt this season before being handed the torch by redshirt senior Dillon Gabriel.

Barring any transfer portal additions or further commitments, Hawkins will provide some much-needed depth when he arrives at OU in 2024.

The Sooners’ current backup quarterback, redshirt senior Davis Beville, will have graduated by then. OU also watched four-star freshman quarterback Nick Evers transfer to Wisconsin this past offseason.
