OU baseball coach Skip Johnson agrees to new contract through 2029 season

NORMAN — OU baseball coach Skip Johnson is staying at the school after interviewing and being in the mix for Texas A&M’s head coaching job, D1 Baseball reported Saturday.

The school announced Saturday that Johnson agreed to a new contract that will run through the 2029 season nearly a month after the Sooners completed their 2024 season one win shy of the NCAA super regionals. OU won the Big 12 regular-season title for the first time in program history in 2024 and finished with a 40-win season for the second time in three seasons before falling to UConn in the Norman Regional.

"The job coach Johnson and his staff have done is simply remarkable," OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said in a statement. "... He is deserving of that. And we look forward to more big things certainly on the horizon under Skip's leadership."

Johnson took over as head coach at OU in 2018. In his seven years, the Sooners have made four NCAA Tournament appearances and fell to Mississippi in the College World Series championship series in 2022.

Johnson made $775,000 in 2024, which includes a payment of $100,000 he received for remaining employed on Feb. 1, 2024. Johnson's salary was set to increase by $25,000 for 2024-25 before the reported new deal.

Throughout his tenure at OU, Johnson has made it known he desires upgrades to the program’s baseball facilities.

“We've got to continue to work on getting our facilities (improved),” Johnson told The Oklahoman in May.

Castiglione even took to X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, to ask for funds to put toward OU’s proposed Baseball Stadium Project.

“For all of you peppering me with messages about our Baseball Stadium Project, here is the way you can help make it happen,” Castiglione wrote, posting a link to donate. “While I appreciate the enthusiasm, we need financial support to complete it. Contractors won’t accept social media posts for payment.”

The Aggies fell to Tennessee in the CWS championship series on June 24. One day later, Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle accepted the Texas baseball job.

Johnson has deep roots in The Lone Star state. A native of Denton, Texas, Johnson played collegiately at Ranger College, North Texas and UT-Pan American. He served as the head coach at Navarro College and was an assistant coach at Texas from 2007-16.

Johnson’s decision to stay is significant for the Sooners as they head into the SEC.

In its new conference, OU will face Texas A&M as conference foes.
