Derek Carr and Bryce Young started out under center in Week 1's kickoff game, but neither team's starting quarterback had their helmet on by the final whistle. The New Orleans Saints beat the Carolina Panthers in a 47-10 landslide, with backup quarterbacks Jake Haener and Andy Dalton closing this one out. Head coach Dennis Allen, offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, and special teams coach Darren Rizzi clearly did a great job preparing their team.

So what did we learn? What's the story from this game? And what's coming up next? Here's everything we know after the Saints started the new season with a win:

Final score: Saints 47, Panthers 10

The Saints leapt out in front with a 30-0 lead in the first half, including three Derek Carr touchdown passes and as many field goals from Blake Grupe (who set a new personal-best from 57 yards). They kept up the pressure in the second half and weren't seriously challenged by the Panthers after taking that early lead.

Four Saints players exited this game with injuries:

  • CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring): Lattimore only returned to practice this week after missing most of training camp with a hip flexor issue, so he's probably just dealing with some cramping as he gets his legs back under him. He didn't return to the game but FOX Sports sideline reporter Jen Hale characterized it as more a precaution than a serious injury.

  • LG Lucas Patrick (toe): Patrick was initially questionable to return but the team later downgraded his status and said he wouldn't get back in the game. We'll have to wait and see whether this is a significant injury but there's a bad history of turf toe issues in New Orleans.

  • TE Foster Moreau (head): Moreau fell awkwardly and hit his head making a 22-yard reception, and he was attended to by the independent neurological consultant in the blue medical tent on the Saints sideline. We're waiting to learn whether he suffered a concussion or if he's dealing with something else.

  • LB Willie Gay Jr. (undisclosed): Gay was seen walking to the locker room with a member of the training staff but his status is unclear.

It was over when...

Jonathan Mingo's fumble may have sealed it, taking what would've been a manageable 3rd-and-3 from Carolina's 40-yard line to the Saints taking over inside Panthers territory. Credit to Tyrann Mathieu for forcing and recovering the fumble. That set up another Blake Grupe field goal, which put the game out of reach at 23-0 late in the second quarter.

  • QB Derek Carr's final passing line: 19-of-23 for 200 yards with 3 touchdown receptions, a completion percentage of 82.6% with 1 sack and no turnovers

  • RB Alvin Kamara led the team in scrimmage yards with 83 yards and a touchdown on the ground (averaging 5.5 yards on 15 attempts) plus 27 receiving yards from 5 catches (on 5 targets)

  • WR Rashid Shaheed caught 3 receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown

  • TE Foster Moreau had 4 catches for 43 yards, both career highs with the Saints, also scoring a touchdown

  • CB Alontae Taylor totaled 6 tackles (5 solo) with a pass deflection and 3 sacks, a Saints franchise record for a defensive back

  • K Blake Grupe connected on each of his field goal attempts from distances of 57, 44, 52, and 39 yards, also nailing three extra point tries

The Saints are going to remain in New Orleans for a week of practice before hitting the road -- their next opponent is the Dallas Cowboys, a popular Super Bowl pick, who will host them at AT&T Stadium for a noon kickoff on Sept. 15. We knew Dennis Allen's team could pick on bad rosters like the Panthers. Finding out whether they can hang with a great squad like the Cowboys is going to be their first real test this season.
