Oregon's Josh Jamieson rounds out Kenny Payne's first Louisville basketball staff
Kenny Payne said he planned to take his time in rounding out a Louisville basketball coaching staff and to keep his final assistant coaching hire a secret.
He succeeded on both fronts.
On Wednesday, 40 days after he was named the Cardinals head coach, Payne completed that process, hiring former Oregon staffer Josh Jamieson as his third assistant.
"For me, this is a culmination of a lot of years of a tremendous relationship with Kenny, and a shared philosophy that we've had about the ability to do things a certain way," Jamieson said at a news conference Wednesday. "I'm over the moon for a chance to get here and to really be part of the program that he's putting together. I think it's a new day in Louisville. I think it's a very exciting one."
Jamieson served as executive director for Oregon men's basketball last season and was director of operations for the previous 14 years with the Ducks, dating back to Payne's days as an assistant there. Over his 15 years at Oregon, the Ducks averaged almost 23 wins per season and won 20 games each of the past 12 years, including a school-record 33 games in the 2016-17 season, reaching the Final Four for the first time in 78 years.
Jamieson's salary was not immediately available. According to signed offer letters the Courier-Journal acquired via open-records request, assistant coaches Nolan Smith will earn a starting base salary of $400,000 and Danny Manning $600,000.
Payne said he felt "great" about keeping the Jamieson hire under wraps. Jamieson joked that he kept the hiring process so close to the chest that "My mom's lucky to know" about the job.
Jamieson hasn't been an assistant coach since a two-year stint at Portland from 2003-05, but he described his role at Oregon as chief operating officer of the program. He didn't work directly with players on a daily basis, but he still played a part in strategy and offensive and defensive philosophy. He was the designated Oregon support staffer to do on-court work with players when assistant coaches were away for recruiting or other travel.
And though he wasn't a recruiting assistant, he played a part in the recruiting process, which he noted when asked about the adjustment back into an assistant coaching role.
"I think that’s a totally fair question and one that thankfully through my relationship with Kenny he had no doubt about," Jamieson said. "I have no doubts either. What it will be is just getting back out, building the relationships, continuing to build on ones that are already there."
Payne said his newest hire, is "one of the brightest young basketball minds in the business"
"He could easily be sitting in a general manager’s spot on an NBA team," Payne said. "That’s how smart he is. But on top of that... you’re talking about a basketball coach. A really good basketball coach.
Payne said adding Jamieson to Smith and Manning gives Louisville "a great staff."
"Not good," Payne said. "It's great."
The Cardinals coaches are in the process of building a roster. Five players from this season — centers Sydney Curry and Roosevelt Wheeler, guard El Ellis and forwards Mike James, JJ Traynor and Jae'Lyn Withers — have announced they'll return. James sat out last season with an Achilles injury.
Louisville has commitments from high school swingman Kamari Lands and transfer Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, a power forward from Tennessee.
