DELAND — Stetson's most successful men's basketball season in more than two decades ended Tuesday night with a disappointing one-and-done.

Fifth-seeded Lipscomb made its final 11 shots from the field, pulling away from the fourth-seeded Hatters for an 83-70 victory in an ASUN quarterfinal at the Edmunds Center. Jacob Ognacevic led the Bisons (20-12) with 22 points and seven rebounds, and Derrin Boyd chipped in 21 points, hitting four of Lipscomb's 10 3-pointers.

Lipscomb advances to meet top-seeded Kennesaw State on Thursday in an ASUN semifinal. Liberty will meet Eastern Kentucky in the other half of the bracket.

Stetson finishes with a 17-13 record, its first winning campaign since 2001 highlighted by road wins at Florida State and South Florida, as well as a dozen victories within the league.

"It starts with the kids. The kids are the culture," Hatters coach Donnie Jones said of the program's upturn. "We went from hoping to win to expecting to win. … Now it's important that we build on what we've got and take another step next season."

Jalen Blackmon, the ASUN's Newcomer of the Year and a first-team selection, led all scorers with 31 points. He caught fire near the end of the first half, burying a pair of 3s to help trim what was once a 10-point deficit down to two at halftime.

Stetson carried that momentum into the early stages of the second half, building a 45-39 lead at the 14:34 mark. The Hatters trailed for 18 of the 20 minutes prior to the intermission.

"We weren't particularly happy about how we played in the first half," Blackmon said. "Those first four minutes (of the second half), we wanted to get up on them and make a statement."

With six minutes left, it appeared the third meeting between the Bisons and Hatters — and the second in the space of five days — was destined once again for overtime. But, Matt Schner ignited Lipscomb's decisive hot streak with a bucket in the paint and a fast-break 3, putting his team ahead 57-55.

Schner, a Boca Raton native and former NCAA Division III All-American at Emory, had 12 of the Bisons' 22 bench points. Lipscomb also outscored the Hatters 9-0 off fast breaks.

Blackmon's pair of free throws out of a 30-second timeout kept the Hatters within two possessions with 3:40 left. But the Bisons nailed three shots in less than 90 seconds — a turnaround jumper by Will Pruitt, a 3-ball from Boyd and a jumper in the paint by Ognacevic — to settle the outcome once and for all.

"I think it's important that you don't outthink the room," Lipscomb coach Lennie Acuff said of the Bisons' rematch gameplan on such a short turnaround. "You don't try to get ahead of yourself or do too much. This is game 32; you do what got you here.

"We've really been playing good basketball. We started 1-3 in the league, and our guys just hung in with us and kept getting better."

Stephan Swenson, who Jones calls the team's "quarterback," returned from injury to chip in seven points and four assists. Luke Brown had 15 points, and Josh Smith added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Hatters.
