Breakout Kennedy Todd-Williams performance helps Ole Miss women's basketball beat Georgia
On Sunday, Kennedy Todd-Williams played like the difference-maker Ole Miss women's basketball believed she could be when the Rebels acquired her out of the transfer portal this offseason.
It hasn't always been easy for the former North Carolina standout in Oxford. But it was for Todd-Williams against Georgia in a 69-59 victory for the Rebels at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens.
Todd-Williams tied a career-high with 22 points in a bounce-back Ole Miss victory. And she achieved that landmark with remarkable efficiency, connecting on 10 of her 15 shots overall and two out of her three 3-point attempts.
She was effective in the mid-range game and a willing playmaker on the inside. And the 3-point performance was a significant bonus. Ole Miss (13-5, 3-2 SEC) had not made more than three in any of its previous four SEC games. It made five against the Lady Bulldogs (10-9, 1-5).
Todd-Williams said she believes the showing can be a turning point for her after an up-and-down start to her Ole Miss career.
"Toddy has been sowing seeds since she stepped foot on campus," Rebels coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin said postgame. "Transfers, they just take a while. I've been telling Toddy: 'Repay yourself for the work that you put in every single day.'
"She does the extra. Nobody is more deserving of her having the type of performance she had."
Todd-Williams started quickly with seven first-quarter points, and the Rebels needed them. Their defense faltered early, allowing Georgia to score 18 first-quarter points and take a slim lead.
But Ole Miss returned to its identity in the second quarter, forcing eight Georgia turnovers and holding the Lady Bulldogs to nine points as the Rebels took command of the game. After Georgia made a run to tie the game midway through the third quarter, the Rebels got the ball into the paint, where they scored 36 points on the afternoon, to steady themselves.
By the 7:14 mark of the fourth quarter, Ole Miss had a comfortable double-digit lead.
The Rebels played efficient offense all afternoon, shooting 51.7% as a team. Alongside Todd-Williams, Snudda Collins had a major role in that success. The veteran supplemented Todd-Williams' scoring with 17 points.
"We were expecting Snudda to have a (day) like this," McPhee-McCuin said.
