Oklahoma State wrestling rolls on road against Missouri, improves to 12-0 on season

Thanks to multiple significant upsets and a weight-class switch for one of Oklahoma State’s star wrestlers, the third-ranked Cowboys dominated No. 5 Missouri, 24-10, on Sunday afternoon.

The Cowboys (12-0) now have three dual victories over opponents ranked in the top five at the time, two coming on the road.

Going into the unfriendly territory of the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Missouri, the Cowboys jumped out to a strong start with an upset by 20th-ranked Troy Spratley over Missouri’s No. 7 Noah Surtin, 4-1 in sudden-victory overtime.

Missouri forfeited at 133 pounds, and in reaction, OSU sent Sam Smith to the mat for the victory. That allowed the Cowboys to move Daton Fix to 141, where he defeated No. 26 Josh Edmond 2-1.

The next big upset came at 157, where OSU’s No. 17 Teague Travis picked up a 4-2 decision over No. 10 Brock Mauller, which gave OSU an 18-0 lead.

At 174, OSU freshman Brayden Thompson earned the biggest win of his young career, scoring a takedown and four nearfall points in overtime for an 8-1 win over fifth-ranked Peyton Mocco.

The Cowboys will be at home for the rest of the regular season, hosting No. 11 South Dakota State, No. 22 OU and No. 2 Iowa over the next three weekends.
