Oklahoma State wrestling: Cowboys pull road upset at NC State

The Oklahoma State wrestling team accomplished something Friday night that it hadn’t done since a victory at Iowa in 2019.

The ninth-ranked Cowboys went into the arena of a top-five opponent and won, earning a 22-12 victory over fourth-ranked North Carolina State at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.

Teague Travis came through with the biggest upset of the night and OSU added victories in some swing matches between highly ranked wrestlers to turn the tide.

The Pokes, now 5-0 in duals this season, got key wins to start the night from 125-pounder Troy Spratley and 133-pounder Daton Fix.

Spratley, ranked No. 20 nationally, picked up a 7-2 decision over No. 17 Jakob Camacho and Fix, ranked No. 3, scored a major decision over fifth-ranked Kai Orine.

After a pair of NC State victories, OSU’s Teague Travis, ranked 23rd at 157 pounds, upset No. 5 Ed Scott 7-6, thanks to a pair of key reversals by Travis.

“He’s a hard worker,” OSU coach John Smith said. “It’s just a matter of him believing this is where he is and this is what he can do. He’s finding that out a little bit through his hard work and through his effort. It’s really good to see him have success.”

From there, the Cowboys got wins in the next three matches from Izzak Olejnik, Brayden Thompson and Dustin Plott for a 19-7 lead. Plott, ranked third at 184, had a 13-8 decision over fifth-ranked Dylan Fishback to virtually seal the victory.

The Cowboys will be back on the road next weekend for duals at Pitt and West Virginia before finishing with seven of the final eight duals of the season at home.
