Oklahoma State softball: Cowgirls attack early to finish off sweep of UCF

STILLWATER — Two days after scratching out just three hits against Central Florida pitcher Sarah Willis, the Oklahoma State hitters fine-tuned their approach on Sunday afternoon.

The result was an early offensive explosion that keyed a 6-4 win over UCF and a series sweep for fourth-ranked OSU (24-3, 5-1 Big 12) at Cowgirl Stadium.

“We talked about the adjustments that needed to be made yesterday, even though we didn’t plan on seeing her,” said sophomore Claire Timm, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI single. “I think that helped us because we got to perfect our plan in a different way and it really made a big difference.”

Freshman Karli Godwin entered the weekend preparing for Willis’ tricky changeup but hardly saw one. Yet she still hit two homers off the senior right-hander, the second coming in Sunday’s first inning to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead.

In the second, runs came in on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball before Timm’s grounder to shortstop. With two outs, Timm beat out the throw, allowing Tallen Edwards to score from third base. And that ended the day for Willis.

“It felt good to execute,” OSU coach Kenny Gajewski said. “We just gotta keep going, not let off the gas.”

UCF (14-11, 2-4) rallied for the second straight game, adding a run in the third inning before Sona Halajian hit a three-run home run off OSU relief pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl in the top of the sixth.

Once again, OSU’s offense responded. Rosie Davis hit a deep shot to left-center field that went off the glove of a diving Kate Burge for a double. And Micaela Wark followed with a double of her own to score Davis for the 6-4 lead.

“(Gajewski) just tells us to do what we do and stay within ourselves,” Godwin said of the team’s knack for responding to opponents’ success. “When we do that, we can do some pretty cool things. We’re never out of a ballgame. We know how to string together some hits and go from there.”

Starter Ivy Rosenberry (7-1) allowed a run on five hits over four innings to earn the win.

The Cowgirls also flashed some defense, including back-to-back running catches by corner outfielders in the top of the fourth inning.

Timm charged hard on a sinking line drive, snagging it just above the ground along the left field line. Then right fielder Macy Graf chased down a line drive that seemed destined for the right-center field gap.

“Those are back-beakers,” Gajewski said. “We had the shoestring catch in left, and then Macy Graf makes the play out there — a kid who hasn’t played a lot of outfield.

“We’ll look back on this, and they hit some balls really hard here today. They outhit us.”

Getting his first taste of UCF, Gajewski is excited about what the newcomer brings to the Big 12.

“They improve our conference,” he said. “They’re (an NCAA Regional) team. They’ll be there at the end. They play a great schedule. They win games. They’ll be fine.”
