Oklahoma high school wrestling: Stillwater's Angelo Ferrari tops OSU signee for Class 6A 160-pound title

The anticipation was brewing inside State Fair Arena.

As the Class 6A 160-pound finals neared at the state wrestling tournament, a large crowd started to gather around mat No. 9.

The match of the night featured a pair of wrestlers at completely different points of their high school careers.

Stillwater’s Angelo Ferrari, the youngest brother of Oklahoma State standout AJ Ferrari, was looking to claim his first title. On the other side was Owasso star and Collinsville transfer Jordan Williams, a three-time 5A state champion and Oklahoma State signee.

The match lived up to the hype, and Ferrari came out on top.

The sophomore never trailed as he went on to beat Williams 2-1 in a tiebreaker Saturday night.

Ferrari was confident and relaxed heading into the match. He was definitely ready when it began.

“I was more excited for the match,” he said. “Not a lot of pressure. Just more excitement.”

Ferrari lost in the 152-pound finals last year to Edmond Memorial’s AJ Heeg. In what was probably the most exciting match of the tournament, Heeg won with a last-second escape in an ultimate tiebreaker.

This year, Ferrari was again involved in arguably the best battle of the tournament but was on the winning side this time.

Ferrari and Williams were set to wrestle in the 6A East Regional championship a week earlier in Stillwater, but Williams was awarded the win as Ferrari sat with an undisclosed injury.

Both wrestlers finished the year with stellar records. Ferrari was 38-1, while Williams was 28-1.

Their title match was certainly memorable. The intensity was high, and both wrestlers were drenched in sweat when it was over.

“He was fast,” Ferrari said. “I already knew that. We trained a lot this summer. He was really fast. But towards the end, we were sliding a lot. It was really slippery.”

Ferrari, who pinned Yukon's Bryce Goucher in the quarterfinals Friday and beat Mustang star and OU signee John Wiley 3-2 in Saturday's semifinals, was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler in Class 6A.

He was one of four Stillwater wrestlers who won a title, and the Pioneers captured their second straight team championship.

Junior 126-pounder and OSU commit Cael Hughes became a three-time state champion and remains undefeated in high school, freshman LaDarion Lockett claimed the 145-pound crown and sophomore Kael Voinovich won at 152 pounds.

Stillwater finished with 158 points. Edmond North was the runner-up with 123½, and Bixby was third with 90½.
