Oklahoma high school track & field: Heritage Hall boys win fifth title

Andy Bass and the Heritage Hall boys track and field team didn’t necessarily enter the season with expectations of winning a team championship.

The Chargers have several talented athletes, including Bass, but they weren’t sure how everything would pan out.

“Coming into the season, we just all wanted to do as good as possible,” Bass said. “We didn’t really talk about a state championship. But towards the end, we realized it was possible, so we pushed ourselves.”

That extra push proved to pay off for Heritage Hall.

The Chargers won the Class 3A state title Saturday at Ardmore High School, their first boys track championship since 2017 and fifth overall.

Heritage Hall finished with 116 points, 10 more than runner-up Owasso Rejoice Christian.

Bass, a junior, led the way as he claimed titles in the 100-meter dash (10.56 seconds) and the 200 (21.74).

He was also a member of Heritage Hall’s 400 relay team that broke the Class 3A state meet record with a time of 41.96.

The other members of the team were freshman Jerrod Williams, junior Jordyn Harris and senior River Faulkner.

“We put up a really good time last year in the 4x1, 42.08, so that was kind of our goal going into the season,” Bass said of breaking the record. “There were doubts and then there were times when I thought we’d get it, but in the end, we showed today we knew we would break it.”

Bass wasn’t the only Heritage Hall boy who claimed an individual title Saturday.

Freshman Graham Murphy won the high jump as he cleared 6 feet, 8 inches.

Overall, it was a well-rounded performance for Heritage Hall.

“These boys all year just go knock down doors for us no matter what we put out there with them,” Heritage Hall coach Eric Lyons said. “So it’s a really big thing to see them put that together and come out here and end up on the top.”

Elijah Green of Classen SAS wins 400 in Class 4A

Elijah Green won his first state title as he finished the 400 in 48.72.

Green, a junior at Class 4A Classen SAS, had a close battle with Tulsa Lincoln Christian junior Jackson Strode, who finished in 48.94, and did just enough to get the win.

“I knew that Jackson, he’s a strong runner,” Green said. “I knew that he was going to push me to PR and just get that time that I needed, so I was just trusting my training. I just had that confidence.”

Green is a standout football player for the Comets. The 6-foot-2, 184-pound receiver and defensive back is a three-star recruit, according to Rivals, and holds offers from Air Force, Army, Missouri, Navy, Sam Houston State, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas Tech and Tulsa.

His future is likely on the gridiron, but he’s been running track since he was 5 or 6 and loves the sport.

Green, who also placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 22.46, is beyond proud of how far he’s come since he began high school.

“It means so much,” he said. “I’m just so shocked. My first year, I got last and then last year I got third. I was just hungry. I couldn’t feel better right now.”
