Edmond Memorial claims first girls track title since 2019

The Edmond Memorial girls are champions once again.

The Bulldogs captured their first girls track state title since 2019 and eighth overall as they finished with 113 points, eight more than runner-up Jenks, the two-time defending champion, and 22 more than Edmond Santa Fe.

Junior Kelli Despain was Edmond Memorial’s lone individual champion. She won the discus (136 feet, 10 inches), while Broken Arrow senior Jordan Gibson placed second with a throw of 133-3.

“We didn’t expect anything by far because we knew that Jenks and Santa Fe were creeping up on us,” Despain said. “But we knew we had the capability. We had everything to do it, and we just had to put the pieces together and we did.”

Edmond Memorial also had three runner-up finishers — senior Chloe Ezell in the 800 (2 minutes, 11.64 seconds), junior Kayvon Nubine in the 100 hurdles (14.25) and senior Shannon Briseno in the pole vault (12-0) — and senior Tiyna Ridge placed third in the 100 (12.14).

Along with that, the Bulldogs placed second in the 3,200 relay as Ezell, sophomore Jenna Doolen, sophomore Ella Talley and junior Savannah Hull finished in 9:20.72.

Edmond Memorial also excelled in the 400 relay (47.84) and 1,600 relay (3:54.60), finishing third in both.

Nubine, Ridge, senior Makenna Hall and freshman Braelynn Roberts made up the 400 relay team, while the 1,600 relay squad included Ezell, Doolen, sophomore Lola Smith and senior Lydia Black.

“This has been a really special crew,” Edmond Memorial coach Tyler Sergent said. “They faced a lot of adversity over the past couple of weeks. A lot of injuries, we had injury problems. Just kind of things not going our way in some events, but these girls have just been really resilient. And so, they put a lot of hours and a lot of work in over the past few months.”

She helped Edmond Santa Fe break the state record in the 800 relay with a time of 1:37.43 on Friday. The next day, she won the 400 and 200 (23.83), along with helping the Wolves claim the title in the 400 relay with a time of 46.44, which was just 0.15 seconds slower than the state record.

“It feels really good,” Njenje said. “At the beginning of the year, I did not expect this whatsoever. … Really proud of myself because the last few years wasn’t really my best, and it’s good to finish off strong.”
