Here are some takeaways from the first day of action, with an emphasis on OKC-area athletes and teams.

Midwest City’s De'Yanna Douglas sets state record in shot put

There’s now a new state record holder in the girls shot put.

Midwest City junior De'Yanna Douglas made state history Friday, breaking the record in the event with a toss of 46 feet, 9 inches.

The previous record was held by Grove’s Keely McLaughlin and set in 2017 with a heave of 46-8¼.

Douglas did just enough to eclipse the mark and claim the Class 6A title as she placed ahead of Westmoore senior Accalya King (41-5½) and Putnam West senior Jazmin Adams (40-9½).

Douglas surprised herself by breaking the record.

"My original PR was only like a 43," Douglas said. "I had no intentions of going to break any record today at all."

Douglas, who also competes in the discus and plays basketball, has only been doing her events since her sophomore year.

She placed third in the shot put at the Class 5A state meet last season with a toss of 37-5¾.

"This year, I continued doing it and I made tremendous progress," she said.

Edmond Santa Fe girls break record in 800 relay

Douglas wasn’t the only one who broke a state record Friday.

Edmond Santa Fe’s 800 relay squad set a new mark with a time of 1 minute, 37.43 seconds.

Sophomore Nia Moore, junior Zoey Battles, freshman Zoelie Deaton and senior Emmanuella Njenje are the members of the team, and they were nearly one second faster than the 2021 Midwest City squad that had held the record with a time of 1:38.36.

"We work really well together," Moore said. "We have a lot of really good chemistry. All of us are really good friends. And we just work hard. We prayed about it, we have faith and we just execute every time we get on the track."

The same group of Edmond Santa Fe girls compete in the 400 relay. They finished in 46.83 at regionals. The state record in 46.29 and was set by Midwest City in 1997.

The Wolves will try to break that one Saturday.

Stillwater’s Keegan Thomas, Edmond Santa Fe’s Natalie Duggan win 3,200 in Class 6A

Stillwater senior Keegan Thomas and Edmond Santa Fe sophomore Natalie Duggan are both coming off strong cross country seasons, so it’s no surprise that’s translated to the track.

Thomas, who claimed his first cross country title in the fall, won the Class 6A race in the 3,200 with a time of 9:19.81, using a late kick to pull away and finish ahead of Deer Creek juniors Graham Mitchell (9:22.98) and Brody Woodcock (9:27.08).

Duggan won on the girls side with a time of 11:16.85.

Duggan, who placed fourth at the 2022 state cross country meet, finished ahead of Tulsa Union freshman Ava Cornelius (11:24.69) and Bartlesville junior Gentry Turner (11:35.71).

"It was a pretty slow race," Duggan said. "We were all packed up. So at the last 800, everyone knew that it was whoever just kicked faster."

This was Duggan's first state title, but she'll have plenty of chances to win some more before her high school career is over.

"It means a lot," Duggan said. "A lot of two-a-days, a lot of fights with my dad. Just to be able to get a state title, it's just amazing."
