Edmond North's Dev Mathews ties school record for most TDs in a game

Dev Mathews realized early on that a colossal night awaited him.

The senior running back powered Edmond North past Yukon in a 49-34 win on Friday night to improve their record to 3-5. In the win, Mathews tied a previous school record set by himself in a Week 3 matchup against Edmond Memorial as he scored six touchdowns.

“I knew from the jump that it was going to be a great night when the offensive line started dominating in the first two series of the game,” Mathews said, “But going into matchups that we are favored to win, I tell myself to remain humble. Anybody can beat anybody, and I don’t want to get a big head.”

En route to the win, Mathews had one of the best games of his high school career. The 6-foot, 200-pound senior carried the ball 34 times for 303 yards while tying the Huskies' all-time single-game touchdown record he set in Week 3, where he rushed for 377 yards.

Edmond North lost their first two games as Mathews dealt with cramping, which kept him out of the game in crucial moments down the stretch. However, since Week 2, Mathews has been on a tear.

Through the Huskies’ first eight games, the Edmond native has 146 carries for 1,269 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground. He has added six catches for 93 yards and a touchdown as a receiver out of the backfield. Mathews has offers from Pittsburg State, UCO, Southwestern Oklahoma State, East Central University and Oklahoma Baptist University.

“It means a lot for my coaches to trust me with the ball and to have those records,” Mathews said. “I think it shows that Edmond North is heading in the right direction for the future. They’ve blessed me with the opportunity to play the game I love and I’ll always be grateful for them.”

Heritage Hall's Andy Bass scores eight TDs in win over Plainview

Andy Bass’ senior season has been filled with impressive performances.

An OU preferred walk-on commit, Bass is the leader of Heritage Hall’s offense and has solidified himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the state.

And on Friday at Plainview, his talent was on full display.

The senior finished with eight touchdowns, five passing and three on the ground, as Class 3A top-ranked Heritage Hall beat Plainview 57-28.

Bass hit Rashaud Smith for a 75-yard touchdown on a flea flicker on Heritage Hall’s (8-0, 5-0 District 3A-2) first offensive play and finished 21-of-30 passing for 371 yards. He also ran for 123 yards on 11 carries.

Bass will likely be a receiver or running back at the next level, but he’s showing he’s a more-than-capable passer.

“The fact that he’s not playing quarterback in college is beside me,” Heritage Hall coach Brett Bogert said. “The way he’s throwing the football, we’re certainly lucky to have him for one more year. He takes ownership, he takes leadership of the offense.”

Smith was Bass’ top target and had five catches for 117 yards and two scores against Plainview (4-4, 2-3). Cal Welker had eight receptions for 82 yards and a score, while Jordyn Harris had three catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns.

The fourth-ranked Pioneers won their sixth straight game Thursday as they trounced Putnam West 59-0 in Stillwater.

Chance Acord completed 12 of 18 passes for 240 yards and four scores for Stillwater (6-2, 5-0 District 6A-II-1), while Holden Thompson had 10 carries for 96 yards and a score.

Acord’s top target was Heston Thompson, who had six catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns against the Patriots (3-5, 0-5).

Stillwater began its season with a 49-21 loss to Greenwood (Arkansas) and a 37-34 defeat to Yukon.
