'We want our get back': Roman Miller continues to shine as Mustang sails past Broken Arrow

SHAWNEE — Roman Miller had reached his breaking point.

The junior grew sick of facing Broken Arrow, which had beaten Mustang in the last three matchups.

With that in mind, Miller took natural action off impulse. He was motivated to put the Tigers away this time and silence the ongoing chatter coming from their bench.

"I already had a chip on my shoulder coming in, but it was a lot of chirping and laughing after I lost the ball while driving to the rim," Miller said. "I usually don't talk much trash, but I had a little something to say after hitting the dagger. They really riled me up."

Miller scored 21 points while grabbing nine rebounds to lead the Broncos to a 55-51 win over Broken Arrow in the Shawnee Invitational.

The lanky 6-foot-4 forward came up clutch during the second half, scoring 14 of his 21 points to charge Mustang's comeback victory. Mustang (11-5, 4-4 District 6A-1) has won three consecutive games while giving the Tigers (11-3, 5-1 District 6A-4) just its second loss to a Class 6A team of the season.

"Our Achilles heel this year has been in the third quarter," Mustang head coach Scott Hodges said.

"Even this past week, we've given up some big leads in the third quarter, so I pushed the guys in the locker room at halftime to take control of the game. Roman was big time tonight for us and has been all season long in that regard. We're extremely tough to beat when he's rolling like he was tonight."

Miller has been on a tear to start his junior season, leading the Broncos in scoring while averaging 20 points, seven rebounds and 2.5 steals per game through 16 games.

He views playing the game of basketball as both a privilege and a blessing. Miller's immense love for the game has led him to grasp that he can't afford to take golden opportunities for granted.

"I view every game as an opportunity to improve," Miller said.

"Any time I can get game action, I want to take full advantage of the situation. It helps when you have guys like Tyson (Pogi) and the twins who push me to lead the way and be aggressive. Whenever I step out on the floor, I'm motivated to be a better version of myself than I was yesterday."

The Tigers managed to dominate Mustang at the rim early thanks to eight first-half points from guard Jailun Talley. However, countered buckets from Pogi, a freshman, allowed the Broncos to remain within six points heading into halftime. Pogi finished with nine points and six steals.

The Broncos turned up the pressure in the second half, sparking a 15-4 run out of the locker room, which provided momentum for the second-half comeback. Mustang's Jaden Johnson provided much-needed scores down the stretch, with Miller and Pogi receiving heightened defensive attention, adding in 11 points of his own.

Mustang advanced to Saturday night's Shawnee Invitational championship game against Choctaw. The Broncos previously finished as runner-ups to Broken Arrow in last year's Shawnee Invitational and remain eager to redeem their fault from a year ago.

"We were pretty disappointed after we lost in the finals last year, especially because we were so close," Miller said. "So now that we're back in that position again, we want our get back. I think our wins in tournaments like the Mustang Holiday Classic also give us an edge to be prepared in big moments too. I'm ready to get going tomorrow."

While Choctaw has been a highly productive offensive unit through the start of its 11-2 season, the Yellowjackets relied heavily on their stout defense Friday.

Despite trailing after the conclusion of the first quarter, Choctaw felt there was another gear it could kick into.

And just moments into the second half, the Yellowjackets did just that.

Choctaw embarked on a 24-8 run in the third quarter, which helped push it over the top for a victory over Bixby in the Shawnee Invitational on Friday. Head coach Jermaine Simpson began blitzing Bixby's Sam McCormick, who scored seven first-half points, which led to a slew of turnovers and additional points in transition.

Five players scored double figures for the Yellowjackets, and sophomore Jordan Valentine led with 15 points, making four 3-pointers.

"I personally believe we're one of the better teams in the state," Simpson said adamantly.

"After nights like tonight, I hope our guys see and understand that. We wanted to come out and make the statement that somebody will have to see us to make it to that final game."

The win improves the Yellowjackets to 11-2 on the season, and they have now won five of their last six games after finishing in second place at the Bishop McGuinness Classic.
