OKC Thunder first-round draft pick Nikola Topic undergoes successful knee surgery

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Nikola Topic underwent successful surgery to repair a left ACL tear, the team announced Wednesday.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, known for having worked with Tom Brady and Leonardo DiCaprio, at the Kerlan Jobe Institute in Los Angeles with Thunder medical personnel on hand. As part of his rehabilitation, the team expects Topic to miss the length of the 2024-25 season.

Selected with the 12th overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft, Topic was widely expected to be a top-five pick before his evaluations at the NBA’s overseas combine in Italy, where it was revealed he incurred a partially torn ACL.

The Thunder hardly hesitated on draft night, equipped with unique experience. Topic won’t even be the first player within this iteration of the Thunder to be sidelined for a season.

After center Chet Holmgren missed his rookie season with a Lisfranc injury, he placed second in this year’s Rookie of the Year race while averaging 16.5 points and 7.9 rebounds for a 57-win Thunder team.

Topic and the Thunder have each expressed optimism considering what they have to draw on.

“I'm really grateful that I'm here with this great organization,” Topic said at his introductory press conference. “I'm really grateful that they have experience with Chet who didn't play his first year, so we assume that will be the case with me.”
