Ohio State women's basketball, in 1st game as No. 2 team, rolls to win over Nebraska
In its first game since climbing to the No. 2 spot in the Associated Press poll, the Ohio State women's basketball team looked like a team worthy of its poll position.
The Buckeyes (22-3) rolled to an 80-47 victory over Nebraska, which was also having a momentous week.
The Cornhuskers (16-9) were coming off an upset of the previous second-place team, Iowa, 82-79 on Sunday. That victory was keyed by Nebraska's defense, which held Caitlin Clark, the nation's leading scorer at 32.1 points per game, to zero points in the fourth quarter.
Wednesday, it was Ohio State's defense that stood out, as the Buckeyes limited Nebraska to 36% shooting and forced 30 turnovers with 15 steals.
It was the third time in the last five games that OSU has held their opponent to fewer than 50 points.
Offensively, guard Jacy Sheldon paced the Buckeyes with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting. She made five shots from behind the arc. Forward Cotie McMahon had her fifth double-double of the season, posting 20 points and 10 rebounds. Rikki Harris tied her season high with 11 points.
Ohio State has now won 12 straight. It's the team's longest winning streak since 2006-07 season, when the Buckeyes won 13 in a row.
The Buckeyes don't play again until Feb. 22, when they travel to Penn State. When the two teams met in early December, the Nittany Lions took OSU to overtime before Ohio State pulled away 94-84.
