'A feeling of insane excitement.' Garrett Wilson goes to Jets with 10th pick of NFL draft
Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson was selected by the New York Jets with the 10th overall pick of the NFL draft on Thursday.
Wilson is the first Buckeye receiver to be selected in the first round since Ted Ginn Sr. was taken ninth by the Miami Dolphins in 2007.
"It’s a feeling of insane excitement," Wilson said in an interview with reporters covering the Jets.
Wilson, who lived in Dublin as a boy before moving to Austin, Texas, caught 143 passes for 2,213 years and 23 touchdowns in 32 career games with the Buckeyes. Last year as a junior, Wilson had 70 receptions for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He was a slot receiver his first two years as a Buckeye before moving outside last year. Wilson believes having played both spots showed his versatility.
"That's something that being a receiver, taking a lot of pride in what I do, I wanted to have that in my game," Wilson said at the NFL combine. "This past season, moving back outside was good for my development. Seeing DBs up in my face, a lot of good cornerbacks, I feel like that translates everywhere, so I feel like I can do both for sure."

Wilson has long been considered a likely first-round pick. He ensured that by running a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, a hundredth of a second faster than teammate Chris Olave, who went with the 11th pick to the New Orleans Saints.
Former Buckeye Jameson Williams, who transferred to Alabama after spring practice in 2021 and blossomed with the Crimson Tide, was taken with the 12th pick by Detroit. The Lions and Saints each traded up.
USC's Drake London was the first wide receiver taken in the draft. The Atlanta Falcons picked London with the eighth pick.
The 5-11½, 183-pound Wilson plays bigger than his size and excels at making catches in tight coverage because of body control honed as a star basketball player. Wilson also has the elusiveness to turn short catches into long gains.
The last two years, rookie receivers have made a major impact. Justin Jefferson caught 88 passes for 1400 yards with Minnesota in 2020. Ja'Marr Chase had 81 catches for 1,455 yards to help the Bengals reach the Super Bowl last year.
"I feel like I could be one of those dudes that is the next one of those guys," Wilson said at the NFL combine. "where they have a big role their rookie season and play a big role on their team. That's what I plan on being and am gonna train to be. That's the goal."
Wilson will catch passes from quarterback Zach Wilson, who was the second overall pick in last year's draft.
"I think he’s got a lot of talent, especially arm talent," Wilson said. "I remember watching his pro day last year, and it was a really good pro day. I feel he approaches the game the right way and I’m excited to get up there and start getting some reps with Zach."
Wilson was the Jets' second selection in the first round. New York took University of Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner with the fourth pick. The Jets later traded back into the first round to select edge rusher Jermaine Johnson from Florida State. Johnson had been considered a possible top-10 pick.
The Jets haven't made the playoffs in 12 years.
"I’m aware of the history but I want to focus on what’s going to happen now and what’s going to happen this season," Wilson said. "We have to try to put our best foot forward and build, and that’s what I plan to do."
