Ohio State hires former Dolphins coach Joe Philbin as offensive analyst

Ohio State has added a former NFL head coach to its staff.

The Buckeyes have hired former Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin as an offensive analyst, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday. ESPN first reported the hiring.

Philbin, 61, started at Ohio State two weeks ago.

"He brings a diverse background of being an O-line coach, a coordinator, and a head coach," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said, "and that diversity is really going to bring a lot of value to the offensive staff room."

Brian Hartline played for Philbin with the Dolphins and now can use Philbin as a sounding board as he adjusts to becoming a first-time offensive coordinator in addition to being OSU's wide receivers coach.

Philbin had coached in the NFL since 2003. He was Green Bay's offensive coordinator in 2010 when the Packers won Super Bowl XLV. He previously was the team’s offensive line coach.

In 2012, Miami hired him as its head coach. He was 24-28 before being fired after four games of the 2015 season.

Philbin became offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts for the next two seasons before returning to Green Bay as offensive coordinator in 2018. He served as interim coach following Mike McCarthy’s firing.

In 2020, the Dallas Cowboys hired Philbin as their offensive line coach. He was among five coaches not retained after last season.

Jack Mewhort, the left tackle on Ohio State's undefeated 2012 team, played for Philbin in Indianapolis before knee injuries ended his career.

"The principles he taught, at least from an offensive-line perspective, were things that I felt I really lacked," Mewhort said. "He looked at offensive line play from a whole athletic perspective, if that makes sense. He didn't want to refine it to, 'Take this step and step six inches here and put your hand here.' He wanted guys to be athletes who just happened to be offensive linemen. He was all about the angles off the ball and running off the ball."

Mewhort said the first 12 games he played under Philbin before he injured his knee were the best he ever played.

"A lot of that, if not all of that, is a testament to the stuff that he taught me," he said. "He would grind guys, but also he was a really good person, and that came through in his coaching style."

Before his NFL career, the Massachusetts native coached at several stops, including Ohio University in 1994 as offensive line coach and Iowa from 1999-2002 in the same capacity.

"He really is one of the favorite people I met while playing football," Mewhort said, "That's from things that he instilled in me on the field to just his overall perspective on life and his demeanor. He was always very calm. He never panicked on the sidelines. He always looked at things from a very analytical viewpoint, a solutions-based guy. I just really appreciated him and what he did for me, so I'm a huge, huge Joe Philbin fan."
