Quarterback Devin Brown won’t be available for Ohio State’s spring game on Saturday, coach Ryan Day said.

Brown, a redshirt freshman who has been competing with Kyle McCord for the starting job, underwent a medical procedure on a finger on his right throwing hand on Wednesday.

The surgery isn’t likely to sideline Brown for a long period of time. Day said Brown will resume throwing soon and is expected to make a recovery ahead of preseason training camp in August, but he is missing the remaining spring practices this week.

“He should have pretty much a full summer,” Day said.

The injury to Brown was not an issue that had been lingering, but “something happened” to him in the recent days, according to Day.

When reporters were present at a practice held as recently as Friday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, Brown appeared healthy and split reps with McCord with the first-team offense.

In a tweet, Brown wrote, “Minor speed bump. More determined than ever! Go Bucks!”

The two quarterback vying to replace C.J. Stroud behind center were the backups to the Heisman Trophy finalist last fall, with McCord ahead of Brown on the depth chart.

But after previous scrimmages, Day has said there has been little separation between McCord and Brown.

McCord, as well as Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia and walk-ons Mason Maggs and Chad Ray, are the other quarterbacks available for the Buckeyes’ annual intrasquad scrimmage at Ohio Stadium.
