What Ohio State football fans need to know about new offensive analyst Joe Philbin
Ohio State football added to its offensive coaching staff Tuesday.
The Buckeyes hired former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin as an offensive analyst ahead of the 2023 season. He started with the program two weeks ago.
"He brings a diverse background of being an O-line coach, a coordinator and a head coach," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said, "and that diversity is really going to bring a lot of value to the offensive staff room."

Here's what you need to know about Philbin.
Joe Philbin is a former Big Ten offensive line coach
After stints as an offensive line coach from 1984-98 with six different programs including Ohio, Northeastern and Harvard, Philbin joined Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz's staff in 1999 as the Hawkeyes' offensive line coach.
From 1999-2002, Iowa finished with 22 wins in 48 games, including a two-season stretch in 2001-02 where the Hawkeyes posted an 18-7 record with appearances in the Alamo Bowl and the Orange Bowl.
Philbin coached the Big Ten Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2002 in Eric Steinbach. Iowa offensive lineman Robert Gallery, who Philbin coached from 1999-2002, won the same award in 2003.

Joe Philbin won a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers
In Philbin's five seasons as the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator, his teams put up a lot of points.
Coaching under head coach Mike McCarthy and with either Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers as the team's quarterback, Philbin's offenses averaged 28.3 points, 281.4 passing yards and 105.6 rushing yards per game.
The Packers won Super Bowl XLV to end the 2010 season, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Arlington, Texas with an offense that included Rodgers and wide receivers Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver.

Joe Philbin never had a winning record as an NFL head coach
Philbin's success did not translate into head coaching.
In 56 games as a head coach Philbin led the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers to 26 combined wins, never finishing with a better record than 8-8 in 2013 and 2014.
Philbin was fired from the Dolphins in 2015 after a 1-3 start. He also coached four games for the Packers after McCarthy's firing in 2018, posting a 2-2 record.

How much did Joe Philbin make with the Miami Dolphins?
According to the Palm Beach Post, Philbin signed an initial four-year deal to be the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2012 before signing a one-year extension in 2015. He was reported to have earned at least $3 million per year.
It is not known how much Philbin will make as an offensive analyst at Ohio State.
Joe Philbin was Miami Dolphins coach during bullying scandal
Philbin was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins during the bullying scandal that led to the suspension of offensive guard Richie Incognito in 2013.
During the 2013 season Incognito reportedly sent offensive tackle Jonathan Martin messages including racial slurs and threats of physical violence which led to him taking a leave of absence.
Philbin made the decision to suspend Incognito.
