Ohio State football announces hiring of offensive line coach Justin Frye
Ohio State’s pending hire of Justin Frye as offensive line coach was made official Tuesday morning.
The school announced Frye, who was previously the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at UCLA, will also hold the title of associate head coach for offense.
He replaces Greg Studrawa, who was not retained after six seasons with the Buckeyes.
Announcing the latest move in a statement, coach Ryan Day said he was "thrilled" to bring the 38-year-old Frye and his family to Columbus and pointed to his previous connections with the assistant.
Day and Frye spent four seasons together on coaching staffs at Boston College and Temple about a decade ago.
"I’ve seen first-hand how good he is at developing his players as well building personal connections with them," Day said. "I believe he’ll do great things here to enhance his room and our offense as a whole."
The addition of Frye is expected to help the Buckeyes sort out some of the running game issues that plagued them late in the season, including being held to a season-low 64 yards on the ground in a loss to archrival Michigan that kept them from winning the Big Ten and reaching the College Football Playoff.
UCLA was ranked No. 14 in the Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing offense, averaging 215 yards per game and featuring a 1,000-yard rusher in its backfield in Zach Charbonnet.
In eight of 12 games last fall, it totaled 200 or more rushing yards and rumbled for as many as 329 in a win over Arizona in October.
It was the best season for the Bruins, who finished 8-4 overall and in a tie for second place in the Pac-12 South with a 6-3 conference record, since Chip Kelly took over in 2018. They had gone a combined 10-25 in Kelly's first three seasons in Westwood.
Compensation terms were not immediately available for Frye, who made $700,000 last season at UCLA.
The salary matches what Studrawa made in his final season at Ohio State.
