Odell Beckham Jr. wants to turn the Browns into the 'new Patriots'
The Cleveland Browns have become offseason darlings. They hired Freddie Kitchens and his folksy charm as head coach, signed Sheldon Richardson, traded for Olivier Vernon to strengthen the defensive line, and drafted cornerback Greedy Williams in the second round.
Their biggest splash, of course, was acquiring Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants.
There have been questions about Beckham’s happiness with the trade to Cleveland, but if his words to GQ magazine are an indication, he’s all in.
Looking for a dynasty
GQ’s Cam Wolf spent time with Beckham while he was choosing his outfit for Monday night’s Met Gala, and the receiver talked excitedly about the Browns and quarterback Baker Mayfield.
“I plan on being there for the next five years and trying to bring as many championships there as possible,” Beckham said. “Turning [the Browns] into the new Patriots.”
The New England Patriots, of course, have won six Super Bowls since 2001, and three of the past five. New England has Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, but Beckham sees great things from Mayfield.
“I would say he’s next, but I feel like he’s now. He’s Brett Favre – he’s going to be a Hall of Famer,” Beckham said.
The 26-year-old said he was convinced he’d be traded to the Browns last year, and that he started having a feeling in his gut last December that he wasn’t that happy.
Now, reunited with his best friend and former college teammate, receiver Jarvis Landry, Beckham said he’s “probably the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
About that Met Gala outfit
Since it was GQ, much of the focus was on Beckham’s process in picking his outfit for the Met Gala, the annual fundraising event that often comes with outrageous fashion.
The theme for this year was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” which encouraged attendants to go all out.
Beckham, who in years past has worn standard tuxedos that belied his more avant-garde personal style, showed up in a tux jacket with ripped off sleeves and a kilt.
Which apparently was a 180 degree change from what he first intended to wear.
Working with American designer Thom Browne and his team, Beckham initially said there was “no chance” he’d wear a kilt. But on Sunday night, 24 hours before the Met, as he was headed to Browne’s office, he asked if they could make sure to have the kilt just in case.
“I might just do it just to do it,” Beckham said.
At first, Beckham tries on a mohair tuxedo. He asks if the tailor can cut the pants to shorts, but as that’s happening, Wolf writes, Beckham is looking at the kilt, hanging on a rack.
The tailor cuts, then rips the jacket sleeves, and eventually Beckham says of the kilt, “Can I just try it on?”
He kept it as his ensemble. “I just have too much confidence,” Beckham reasoned. “There’s nothing you can say that’s going to hurt my feelings.”
