Odell Beckham Jr. fined $12,154 for dog touchdown celebration vs. Eagles

The New York Giants fined wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. $12,154 for his controversial touchdown celebration in Week 3’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

After scoring his first touchdown of the season, Beckham got down on all fours in the end zone and lifted his leg as to simulate a dog urinating. Beckham drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that was enforced on the ensuing kickoff, forcing the Giants to kick from the 20-yard line.

Co-owner John Mara said the incident left him “very unhappy” with Beckham. Beckham said he regretted the penalty but not the celebration itself.

“I’m a dog, so I acted like a dog,” Beckham said after the game. “I don’t know if the rulebook said you can’t hike your leg. He said I peed on somebody, so I was trying to find the imaginary ghost that I peed on. But I didn’t see him.”

Beckham also added that he was confused by the NFL’s new rules regarding touchdown celebrations. Earlier in the week, he implied that his celebration was in regard to President Donald Trump’s comments about NFL players. Beckham didn’t address the issue when he met with the media on Wednesday.

So far, Beckham has been fined a total of $221,456 in his career.

Head coach Ben McAdoo said the celebration was a poor reflection of him and the team has a plan in place to handle these situations. He said Beckham had a good week in practice as the team prepares to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium Sunday afternoon.

“He’s focused on preparing for the game,” McAdoo said. “He seems dialed in and focused on his preparation.”

This is the second consecutive week a Giants player has been fined. Rookie tight end Evan Engram was fined $12,154 for grabbing his crotch after scoring his first career touchdown in the Week 2 loss to the Detroit Lions.
