Observations from an extended look into Auburn football's spring practice on Tuesday

AUBURN — Auburn football spring practice is officially back.

The Tigers began Feb. 27 and had two sessions before leaving for spring break. They've returned, and reporters were granted a viewing window into the spring's third practice. It lasted four periods, which amounts to just under an hour.

Here were our takeaways, including a notable throw from a four-star freshman:

  • Early enrollee quarterback Walker White had the play of the day, tossing a potential touchdown over double coverage to fellow freshman Bryce Cain. A pair of defensive backs were in coverage, and White dropped the ball perfectly over the top of them both. Cain briefly bobbled the ball before appearing to control it, but it squirted out after he hit the ground. It definitely would've gone to review in an actual game.

  • The order of QBs seemed to be Payton Thorne, Holden Geriner, Hank Brown and White. That isn't necessarily something major so early in spring practice, but it's notable. Coach Hugh Freeze said Feb. 29 that the starting job was Thorne's to lose.

  • Transfer receiver Sam Jackson V remains in a non-contact yellow jersey. Jackson, who was a WR with Thorne at Naperville Central High School, played quarterback at Cal last season before transferring to the Tigers this offseason.

  • Keionte Scott was absent. That doesn't automatically mean he has an injury; there are plenty of reasons a player may miss practice, and not all of them are cause for concern.

  • Recruits were plentiful, but a couple notable appearances were made by 2024 signee A'Mon Lane-Ganus and former Auburn defensive lineman Marcus Harris. Harris was sporting a shirt from the Reese's Senior Bowl, and he hopes to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft.

  • Freshman Joe Phillips continues to work with the edge rushers.
