Notre Dame women blitz Purdue for highest margin of victory in rout on the road
WEST LAFAYETTE - Reigning ACC Player of the Year Hannah Hidalgo catered to the crowd at Mackey Arena.
Any chance Purdue had at grabbing momentum after two 3-pointers by seniors Ella Collier and Destini Lombard were quickly snatched away by Hidalgo.
The sophomore 5-foot-9 point guard Hidalgo smirked as she picked up Purdue ball handlers full court.
Hidalgo interrupted point guard Jayla Smith's dribble, dove and caused a 10-second violation in the second quarter that squashed any doubt over which team would dominate the night in West Lafayette.
While Hidalgo scored in bunches, it was ultimately the defensive tempo she set that allowed Notre Dame to dole out another punishing 102-58 victory over Purdue.

Notre Dame (2-0) scored the most points in the rivalry's history including passing 100 points and reached the century mark for the second straight time to open the 2024-25 season.
Hidalgo led with 28 points (10-of-20 FG), Olivia Miles scored 17 points and Sonia Citron added 14 points. The trio combined for 6-of-12 from 3-point range.
The win definitively gave Notre Dame the crown having won its 10th straight over Purdue and is now 15-14 all-time against its West Lafayette rivals.
A kind of performance that was indicative of where Notre Dame (2-0) is as a contender to win a National Championship and where Purdue wants to be.
Forward Kate Koval blocked senior Reagan Bass and received a technical foul for taunting. Ultimately a minor consequence on a night where Hidalgo was up to her usual scoring effort. Each shot followed by a wrist point with three fingers and a nod to the Boilermaker student section.
"I think no matter who we play we want to dominate," Citron said. "No matter who is on the court, we want to have that mentality no matter who we have."
The defensive dictation of Hidalgo encapsulated another dominant performance over Purdue.
"She loves defense," Notre Dame coach Niele Ivey said. "It's always been her thing and she's always been a two way player. I know she played with her brothers growing up playing against guys, playing with that toughness and playing with that chip on her shoulder. We actually have someone who loves that side of basketball. It's fun, it's contagious and when you have someone that has defensive mindset, that dog. It's just who she is."
The night for Notre Dame saw the first start of the season for Citron who was seen wearing a boot and missed the season opener against Mercyhurst and exhibition against Davenport.
Citron looked in form despite missing the first two games.
"I'm going to credit that to the coaching staff and my trainer just helping me get back on the court and feeling good," Citron said. "Just preparing, getting my shots up and I put the time in to put myself at ease when I'm playing."
