North Wilkesboro, Indy oval returning to NASCAR schedule in 2024

North Wilkeboro’s revival continues, and the familiar oval at Indianapolis returns.

America’s oldest paved track (Indy) and one of its oldest (North Wilkesboro) will both be on NASCAR’s Cup Series schedule for next year, it was announced Thursday in separate news releases.

North Wilkesboro, in northwestern North Carolina, was part of NASCAR from the 1949 debut Cup season through 1996, when a realignment of the national racing schedule left it kicked to the curb, where it decayed and became weeded-over.

The .625-mile track returned last year as host to the annual All Star Race, but only after an extensive renovation project to get the museum piece back up to racing snuff.

Next year’s All Star weekend is scheduled for May 17-19 and, along with the Cup All Star Race, will include a NASCAR Truck Series event.

“As part of NASCAR’s 75th anniversary, the return to racing at North Wilkesboro Speedway was one of the indelible moments of the 2023 season,” said Ben Kennedy, Senior Vice President for NASCAR.

Meanwhile, to the west at the Crossroads of America, the famed oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway returns to the Cup schedule after three years of hosting its annual event on the Brickyard’s road course.

Indy’s 2024 Cup race will be July 20 and nearly coincide with the 30th anniversary of the first Brickyard 400 on Aug. 6, 1994. As the novelty and excitement of stock cars at the Brickyard began to wane, so did attendance as the 2.5-mile track, with its long straights and minuscule banking, proved incompatible with the type of door-to-door racing NASCAR fans grew accustomed to over the decades.

The move to the road course in 2021 came at a time when NASCAR was expanding its road-course menu, and that race has produced some memorable moments in its short tenure.

However, between the new Next Gen Cup car and Goodyear’s recent Indy tire test on the oval, it’s thought (or at least hoped) the Brickyard will deliver a racier product beginning next year.

“While it’s been exciting to watch the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity series drivers tackle the IMS road course over the last three years, being back on the oval for the 30th anniversary is a much-anticipated homecoming for drivers and fans alike,” Indy Speedway president Doug Boles said in a Thursday press release.
