No mercy: Mason LeLack, St. Andrew's defense complete district semifinals demolition

BOCA RATON — St. Andrew's boys lacrosse holds the No. 1 spot in the state for a reason.

Well, reasons — there are a lot of them.

One of those is a defensive dominance unlike any other team in the county, let alone South Florida.

In Thursday afternoon's game against visiting Calvary Christian, a 23-1 win, senior defender Mason LeLack watched the second half from the sideline.

He'd put in his work, as had the rest of the defense. The rest was earned, and the smile was, too.

It doesn't feel like a district semifinal when the opposition doesn't score until the fourth quarter, 10:45 left in the game, to be exact.

LeLack contributed two groundballs and forced a turnover in the first half.

“I don’t think it’s one person in particular,” LeLack said. “We run a zone defense, so if one person messes us, that affects the entire defense. Everyone out here makes plays, and I think just having depth really helps us.”

Playing one of the toughest schedules in the country, St. Andrew’s is still outsourcing opponents more than 3-to-1, making Thursday’s 23-1 victory over Calvary Christian an expected result.

After all, if practice makes perfect, the Scots have quite the daily competition.

“Our offense is so good that our defense has to play against the best offense every night in practice,” head coach Tony Seaman said. “And our defense is so good that it switches around. So, they hate each other and it takes games against other people for them to like each other again and talk for 60 minutes.”

“Friday and Saturday, they’ll start beating the hell out of each other again,” Seaman joked about the upcoming practices before the Scots take on the winner of Friday’s game between No. 2 Pine Crest and No. 3 American Heritage-Plantation.

While St. Andrew's offense is quite young, LeLack is one of several seniors on defense who is looking to end his high school career with yet another postseason run.

He’s experienced, sure, but Seaman had much more than that to say about his defensive leader.

“He’s been a big-time three-year starter for us,” Seaman said. “He’s probably the smartest player on the team besides being one of the better players on the team. His game savvy is really, really good. His skills are outstanding. He’s just such a great leader and a great kid. He’s on student council. He’s on everything. He’s a great human being.”

On and off the field, LeLack is proving he’s quite ready for the challenges ahead.

And while doors are certain to open for the soon-to-be graduate, LeLack will continue closing doors for opposing offenses as the Scots look to repeat as state champions for the fourth year in a row.
