INDIANAPOLIS — There will not be a rematch between WNBA great Diana Taurasi and Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark this season. Taurasi was officially ruled out of Friday’s game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse with a leg injury.

Taurasi has been one of Clark’s idols in the WNBA. Clark grew up watching Taurasi, who was drafted in 2004.

Taurasi, 42, is a six-time Olympian, 11-time All-Star and two-time WNBA MVP. This will be her fourth missed game in her past five due to injury.

The two first matched up in Phoenix on June 30, with Indiana rallying from a double-digit deficit to win, 88-82.

Clark nearly had a triple-double in that game (despite a migraine), tallying 15 points, nine rebounds and 12 assists. Taurasi had 19 points, three rebounds and three assists.

“What Caitlin’s been able to do in her short career so far has just been nothing short of remarkable,” Taurasi said following that game. “The one thing I really love about her is that she loves the game. You can tell she’s put the work in… she keeps showing up and keeps getting better every single game, and you can tell her future is super bright.”

Taurasi is one of three Mercury players out for Friday’s game, joining Sug Sutton and Charisma Osborne. Fever forward Temi Fagbenle is also out with a right thumb injury.
