It took less than 24 hours for the Texas offense to cool off in Lubbock.

One day after No. 24 Texas exploded for 22 runs and 20 hits, the Longhorns were limited to five hits in a 7-2 loss to Texas Tech. The 17th-ranked Red Raiders evened the best-of-three series that opens Big 12 play for both teams.

Texas struck first on Max Belyeu's second-inning homer, but Texas Tech (11-3) responded by scoring three runs in that frame's bottom half. Former UT infielder Gavin Kash's two-run double in the second session gave the Red Raiders a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Two of UT's five hits were solo home runs by Belyeu and Porter Brown. Those five hits tied a season-low performance for Texas (8-6).

Longhorns sophomore Cody Howard was tagged with the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs over 3⅓ innings. Howard was promoted from the Sunday slot in the rotation for this weekend's series at Texas Tech. He's now 2-1 with a 5.29 ERA.

Texas and Texas Tech will wrap up their series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
