Saturday was not a good day for the NC State basketball team.

The Wolfpack, ranked No. 23 in the country, dropped a home game to No. 12 Virginia Tech, putting up perhaps their worst offensive output in history in the process.

NC State managed only 24 points in the 47-24 loss. Yes, 24. There are 10 Division I players who individually average at least 24 points per game. NC State managed 24 points as a team. Yikes.

The team shot 9-of-54 from the field. That’s a program-worst 16.7 percent. On top of that, the Wolfpack were a putrid 2-of-28 on 3-point attempts. That’s a 7.1 percent clip.

NC State’s leading scorer on the afternoon, C.J. Bryce, had just seven points. Braxton Beverly, the team’s starting point guard, was held scoreless on 0-of-12 shooting, including nine misses from deep.

That’s a rough day at the office.

Fewest points by a ranked team in the shot clock era

Historically, how rough was this performance from NC State? According to ESPN Stats and Info, 24 points is the lowest total by any ranked team in the shot clock era, which dates back to 1985-86. From an NC State perspective, it’s the fewest amount of points since the Wolfpack beat Duke 12-10 in the 1968 ACC tournament. What a spectacle that must have been.

It was clear early on that points were going to be hard to come by for NC State. Kevin Keatts’ team connected on just one of its first 17 field goal attempts, including a span of 13 consecutive misses between the 18:02 and 9:05 marks of the first half.

But Virginia Tech, playing without guard Justin Robinson, the team’s second-leading scorer, didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard either. The Hokies led just 20-14 at halftime before pulling away in the second half behind a double-double from forward Kerry Blackshear Jr. (13 points, 13 rebounds). During that second half, the Wolfpack had a field goal drought of nearly 12 minutes.

Not the fewest points ever by a Division I team

But there is one bright spot for NC State, which dropped to 16-6 overall and 4-5 in ACC play with the loss. Saturday’s output wasn’t the worst in the shot clock era. In 2008, Saint Louis scored only 20 points in a loss to George Washington, setting the modern Division I record for fewest points in a game. Two other schools, Georgia Southern (1997) and Princeton (2005), have scored 21 points in a game.

Before the shot clock was brought to college basketball, the Division I record for fewest points was set by Arkansas State and Temple. Arkansas State lost 75-6 to Kentucky back in 1945 while Temple was bested 11-6 by Tennessee in 1973.
