No. 15 Texas Tech basketball stumbles in road loss to No. 25 TCU: 3 takeaways

FORT WORTH — It was another comeback attempt for the 15th-ranked Texas Tech basketball team inside Schollmaier Arena, but the Red Raiders were unable to replicate last weekend's triumph, falling 85-78 on Tuesday night.

TCU, ranked 25th in the country, went on a 21-3 run in the first half and had answers for everything the Red Raiders (16-4, 5-2) threw at them defensively. The Horned Frogs hit 11 three-pointers in the win.

Pop Isaacs finished with a career-high eight assists. Tech had the ball down six points with about 1:10 left in regulation, but Isaac's 3 attempt hit off the shot clock, resulting in a turnover.

Foul trouble leads to some funky Texas Tech basketball lineups

TCU and Texas Tech both had multiple starters called for multiple fouls in the first half. Darrion Williams, Warren Washington and Kerwin Walton were each charged with two fouls, leading to some makeshift lineups on the fly for Grant McCasland's team.

It started with Washington and Walton getting their fouls. Williams was shifted into the 5-man spot and it led to a transition 3-pointer for Chance McMillian.

That didn't last long, though.

Williams was called for his second personal soon after. Then the Red Raiders put Walton back in and inserted Lamar Washington to the 5 spot for defensive purposes. Lamar Washington got a nice rebound and was fouled, but missed both subsequent free throws, gave up an offensive board and the unit of intrigue was short lived.

Perimeter defense remains an issue for Red Raiders

The Horned Frogs are not an elite 3-point shooting team. But they, like most teams who have played the Red Raiders in Big 12 play, found their stroke from beyond the arc.

at the 12:49 mark of the second half, TCU had connected on eight of its 14 shots from 3-point range — this included a 4-for-4 mark from Micah Peavy, who was a 24.5% shooter from 3 entering Tuesday's game. This marks the sixth game in a row opponents have hit at least eight 3s against the Red Raiders.

Stringing stops an issue down the stretch

Texas Tech continued to stay in it thanks to its offensive firepower, but the ultimate downfall was the team's inability to string stops together.

Each time the Red Raiders cut into the deficit — like Isaacs sinking a 3 to make it 75-70 TCU with 4:07 left. But, the Horned Frogs had an answer.

Jameer Nelson Jr.'s 3 over a gimpy McMillian put the game out of reach with 1:43 left.

What's next?

The Red Raiders turn home from their two-game road trip to host Cincinnati on Saturday at 5 p.m. in United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Tech won its last two home games by overcoming double-digit halftime deficits and is 11-0 in Lubbock this season.
