Nickel: The Bucks' choice of coach and personnel decisions in general aren't up to Giannis
Giannis Antetokounmpo was one of three Milwaukee Bucks players involved in the interview process that led to the hiring of Adrian Griffin, and on Wednesday night, the superstar opened up about that role and his role with the front office in general.
While it has been widely reported - or insinuated - that Griffin was a Giannis hire, Antetokounmpo debunked that theory. Antetokounmpo said he has given his input when asked.
Here's what he said:
"This is the thing that I don't like about the NBA. It's it's a crazy business, you know. Yesterday, Coach Griff was our coach. Today he's not. We walk in there, it's and like he was never here. I don't like that, about the NBA, and I will speak openly about it. But I understand it, because it's business. People being traded, people being waived. People have to change their whole life just like that.
"And out there, people creating a narrative that's not accurate. I'm a person that I really try not to follow and I refuse to fall into the bubble of, 'Oh, this is accurate, this is not accurate,' because always there's going to be something out there about me, about the team. You know: 'Oh, he didn't have a good relationship with Griff.' False. I love the guy. I invited him to my wedding. I talked with him. I was coached by him. And we did very, very, very well."
Antetokounmpo said he has been asked for his input before in his 11 years with the Bucks.
"In a position like that, you have to understand that when somebody's being hired, at times, the GM might come in and (say), 'What do you think about that? What do you think about this?'
"Not just me, players, people that he trusts, their advice. But at times they make it seem like it is the players that are making the decision that this guy got traded because … he wanted him.…"
Of course, the Bucks' big offseason trade was giving up Jrue Holiday, the Bucks' defensive hero from the 2021 championship.
"Like, no," Antetokounmpo continued. "I have a job; my job is to be the best version that I can be and try to lead this team to win games. That's why I get paid. I don't get paid to change people's life and make people uncomfortable. I get paid to defend, block shots... I try to stick to that as much as I can. Because I understand, I don't like that aspect of it. And there's people that get paid a lot of money to make those decisions and those decisions are hard."
Antetokounmpo went on to say he respected the job of GM Jon Horst, for the difficult nature of making these decisions.
"But personally, I don't want to be involved in that," he said. "I don't like that.
"Have I been in a position to be asked, 'What do you think about that? What do you think about this?' Yeah, many times. But I was not involved in the hiring of Coach Griff. I talked with him the same way that I talked with Coach Bud."
During Giannis Antetokounmpo's postgame press conference tonight, @LoriNickel asked Giannis if Bucks coach Adrian Griffin getting dismissed felt any different to him because he was involved in the hiring process of Griffin.

The Bucks hired Mike Budenholzer as head coach after firing Jason Kidd in 2018.
"Of course they asked me, 'What do you think about this guy?' 'I think he's a great guy. He looks like a good guy to me.' But nobody said I was involved in the hiring of Coach Bud - because I was a kid," Antetokounmpo said.
"But of course I was asked, that was, 'What do you think about (him)?' I think he's a great guy. He looks like a good guy.
"But ultimately, I don't make that decision. Don't get me wrong. I wish I did. But I don't. I really don't. I just try to stick with basketball."
