NFL suspends Cardinals' Josh Shaw through 2020 season for gambling on games
This is the epitome of a Friday afternoon news dump: the NFL sent an email announcement declaring that Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw has been suspended through at least the end of the 2020 season.
The reason: Shaw had bet on NFL games on multiple occasions this season.
The announcement says “a league investigation uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way. Nor was there evidence suggesting any awareness by teammates, coaches or other players of his betting activity.”
There was also this statement from commissioner Roger Goodell:
“The continued success of the NFL depends directly on each of us doing everything necessary to safeguard the integrity of the game and the reputations of all who participate in the league. At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances. If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football.”
Shaw can appeal the suspension within three days. Currently he can apply for reinstatement on Feb. 15, 2021.
Shaw has been on injured reserve all season because of a shoulder injury suffered during training camp.
This isn’t the first time Shaw has been in the headlines for negative reasons: in 2014, before his senior season at USC, he was suspended by the Trojans after lying. He told team officials he’d sprained both ankles jumping into a pool to save his drowning nephew; the reality was he’d jumped from a hotel balcony to escape police, who were called during a loud argument he was having with his girlfriend.
