NFL Network's Mike Mayock interviewed for Raiders' GM opening
While it’s expected that Sunday night and Monday will bring a flurry of news when it comes to firings and jobs coming open, there are three jobs that are already vacant: the Cleveland Browns’ and Green Bay Packers’ head coaching positions, and the Oakland Raiders’ general manager gig.
The Packers have already started interviewing candidates, and the Raiders quietly have as well; among the interviews is a well-known but inexperienced name.
Mike Mayock: ‘Strong candidate’
Via NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, their colleague, draft analyst Mike Mayock has emerged as a “strong candidate” for Oakland’s GM opening after an interview.
Mayock is not the only candidate that has been interviewed, but he is “firmly” in the mix.
A fan favorite during the NFL combine and draft weekend for his encyclopedic knowledge of prospective players and for his catch phrases like “natural bender” and “dancing bear,” Mayock is at Arrowhead Stadium for the Raiders’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
He confirmed to Las Vegas Journal-Review Raiders reporter Michael Gehlken that he spoke with the franchise.
“All I can say is I had an interview,” Mayock said. “I know they’ve interviewed a whole bunch of guys. And I have no idea the status.”
Mayock has no front office experience
The 60-year-old Mayock played safety at Boston College and was a 10th round draft pick in 1981. He appeared in nine games for the New York Giants in the 1982-83 seasons.
He has no front office experience.
Mayock has worked as a broadcaster for well over 20 years. He has been nominated for two Emmy awards for his work with NFL Network.
