Yasiel Puig borrows rookie costume to cheer on Los Angeles Rams
Yasiel Puig is an endless font of awesomeness. Beyond baseball, he’s just an entertaining human who seems to love life more than the average person.
He didn’t have to post a video cheering on his own team and Los Angeles’ new football team (the Rams play their very first football game on Monday night), but he did, and he did it in the most Puig way possible.

And of course he tagged Rams player Jared Goff, which is a reference to their Twitter beef from April. From that, the hashtag #PuigYourFriend was born. And from this delightful tweet and video, the hashtag #PuigYourCheerleader has been born. Never stop, Yasiel Puig. For all of our sakes.
If you’re wondering, Puig in a cheerleaders uniform wasn’t totally out of the blue. He didn’t rent it or have it specially made just to welcome the Rams to Los Angeles. You can see where he got it from in this tweet.

He borrowed it from some of the Dodgers rookies because it’s that time of year again, the time when rookies are being called up from the minors and the non-rookies make them dress up in embarrassing outfits. (This practice can also be called hazing.) Some of the costumes are pretty innocently embarrassing, like this from the Rays:
Tradition continues—the #Rays rookies are wearing their Team USA-inspired singlets for the flight to Toronto. pic.twitter.com/EskRF1Gbm2

But players on other teams, like the Dodgers, make their rookies dress up like girls, because apparently it’s embarrassing when men dress up like women. As the Rays prove, there’s a way to continue this tradition of rookie dress-up without using a costume that implies that it’s embarrassing when a man even just looks like a woman, let alone when he shows any characteristics that are traditionally thought of as “womanly” or “girly.”

I have no objection to having rookies dress up in silly costumes, as long as all of them are willing participants. But this practice of using female costumes for rookie dress-up should stop. It’s easy to have men wear costumes like the Rays did, ones that don’t specifically imply that dressing up like a woman is a thing to be embarrassed about, and there are hundreds and thousands of other equally embarrassing costume they can use. Have them all dress up like clowns! Or bananas! Or lobsters! Or a guy in a bathtub! All of these are ridiculous in a much better way than those cheerleader costumes.
If the Dodgers’ rookies were dressing up as squirrels, it would have been just as funny for Puig to do that cheer in a squirrel costume. We could have gotten the hashtag #PuigYourSquirrel! Oh well. Maybe next year…
