Marlins trade Colin Rea back to Padres as damaged goods

At the MLB trade deadline, we don’t often think about return policies. But thanks to the Miami Marlins, we are this year.

The Marlins are sending pitcher Colin Rea back to the team from which he came, the San Diego Padres, as damaged goods. This odd turn of event was originally reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, but made official by the Marlins shortly thereafter.

Rea was the second pitcher acquired by the Marlins in the seven-player trade Friday headlined by Andrew Cashner. Rea, a 26-year-old right-hander, was promptly put on the mound by the Marlins, starting Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched into the fourth inning, then called the Marlins training staff out because of elbow discomfort.

On Sunday, the Marlins put Rea on the disabled list and presumably started looking for another starter to boost their rotation, since they’re surprisingly in the playoff hunt this season.

Things took a different turn Monday, with the Marlins grabbing their receipt, walking back into baseball’s department store and demanding a return. Now the Marlins will get back Luis Castillo, a 23-year-old minor-league pitcher who has some serious upside, according to our own Jeff Passan.

The question now becomes whether the Marlins, in their hunt for pitching, can trade Castillo again for a big-league starter before the 4 p.m. ET Monday trade deadline — for their sake, hopefully someone that won’t land on the disabled list after one day.
