Kobe Bryant elected not to participate in the 2016 Olympics, but fans were treated to the next best thing Monday night when Bryant’s cousin took more shots than any other player on the floor in Team USA’s game against Venezuela.

Venezuela’s John Cox, 35, put up 20 field goal attempts against the United States, but finished with just 19 points. No other Venezuelan player attempted even 10 shots and Carmelo Anthony led the USA with 11 field goal attempts.

Sounds a little like the 18-time NBA All-Star in his family, doesn’t it?

It wasn’t nearly enough to pull off a huge upset and Team USA cruised to a 113-67 victory, which is pretty much the margin most expected. But Venezuela gave them a scare early by keeping things even in the first quarter, 18-18, before USA built a titanic lead in the final three quarters.

Cox played college basketball at the University of San Francisco and has spent the last decade playing professionally in France. His father, “Chubby” Cox, played for the NBA’s Washington Bullets and his uncle is Kobe’s father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant.

Chubby Cox also played professionally in Venezuela where John Cox was born. The country hasn’t qualified for the Olympics in men’s basketball since 1992.

Kobe Bryant played in the Olympics in Beijing and London, earning gold medals in both Games, but decided that his retirement tour with the Los Angeles Lakers would be the end of his playing days and that Rio wouldn’t be in his future.

“Since my retirement announcement, I’m able to watch these guys in a different light,” Bryant said in January. “I’ve come to terms with the fact that they are the future of this game. These are the guys who deserve the spots in Rio. These are the guys who people need to watch and root for. These are the guys to show fans where this game is going in the future.”

Bryant likely made the right decision, but a shootout between cousins certainly would’ve been something to watch.
