Hector Olivera to serve 10 days in jail for domestic assault
Hector Olivera has been found guilty on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge and will serve 10 days in jail, the result of an April incident where Olivera was arrested at a Virginia hotel while the Atlanta Braves were on a road trip for assaulting a woman, later identified as his girlfriend. A Virginia judge sentenced Olivera to 90 days in jail Thursday, but suspended 80 days of the sentence, according to court records obtained by USA Today. TMZ reports Olivera plans to appeal the conviction.
Olivera, who is currently a free agent after being waived by the San Diego Padres following a trade from the Braves in July, was suspended 82 games by Major League Baseball under its domestic violence policy.
The 31-year-old outfielder defected from Cuba in 2014 to sign a six-year, $62.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 30 major-league games, all played with Atlanta, Olivera hit .245/.296/.378 and he has not played since his arrest took place.
