Week 2 is probably too early for anyone to panic, but it’s not too early for anyone to project that the Cleveland Browns are going to be a very, very bad football team. We didn’t even make it through one week of rebuilding before they’ll have to bring in another quarterback to replace the injured Robert Griffin III, thus rebuilding the rebuilding.

When Josh McCown starts, the Browns will become the only team in post-merger history to start at least two quarterbacks in 15 consecutive seasons. McCown was 1-7 with the Browns last season, so no one in Cleveland has too much hope the backup quarterback will bring anything different to the table.

There’s one reason for optimism, though: McCown passed for 457 yards in a win over Baltimore last year and the Ravens are coming to town on Sunday for this year’s home opener. The Browns will be at least one-touchdown underdogs in almost every game they play this season, but they stand the best chance to avoid 0-16 this week, in week five on the road in Tennessee or Week 16 when the San Diego Chargers come to town. Even if they manage to win a game, the record for the franchise’s worst season — 2-14 in 1999 — is very much in play.
