INDIANAPOLIS — The Buffalo Bills have a little more than a week to make a call on bringing back quarterback Tyrod Taylor. New head coach Sean McDermott feels like that is plenty of time to be “methodical” about making a decision.

McDermott said at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday that he and general manager Doug Whaley jointly will decide Taylor’s fate, which must happen prior to March 11. At that point — assuming Taylor is healthy enough to pass his physical — the Bills would be on the hook for a payment of $27.5 million and a salary-cap hit of almost $16 million in 2017.

“We are absolutely in accord,” McDermott said of his working relationship with Whaley. “Doug and I have gotten off to a great start. Doug and I have had great meetings … healthy, productive meetings.

“So sometimes you disagree, but those disagreements are healthy. That goes for every meeting. At the end of the day we’re going to have the right decision for the Bills’ organization, and I think Doug and I are off to a great start.”

When asked how much say in that relationship McDermott holds, he kept it vague: “Doug and I are going to work on this together,” adding, “I’m counting on Doug, and he’s counting on me. I have a lot of trust in Doug and his staff.”

McDermott suggested the Bills could go right up until the deadline before a final call on Taylor has been made, even though the league year and free agency will have started by that point.

“If that’s what it takes, yes,” he said.

As a Plan B, McDermott is getting up to speed on the combine quarterbacks and also has watched all of Cardale Jones’ practice tape from last season, as well as his Week 17 start against the New York Jets.

“Cardale is an option for us as well,” he said. “When you look at Cardale, you do look at what he did in college [at Ohio State, where he won a national title] as part of the evaluation. I’ve gone back — and my staff has gone back — and looked at all the practice tape and the last game of the year. We’re excited about working with Cardale just like we’re excited to work with all our players.”

About six or seven times, McDermott used the term “process” and preached patience. As a coach who cut his NFL teeth in Philadelphia, this might come off as subtle shade to the NBA team there. But it’s more likely just McDermott’s style.

“I am a measured guy,” he said, and it appears he means it with a crucial decision he’ll be a part of before coaching a game with the Bills.
