The top-rated player from LSU’s 2015 recruiting class is leaving the program.

Tyron Johnson, a sophomore wide receiver, announced Thursday on Twitter that he has been granted his release from the Tigers. Johnson was a five-star recruit that Rivals ranked as the 11th-best prospect in the country in his class. He caught nine passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns in his only season at LSU.

Johnson’s father told The Advocate that LSU’s offensive system wasn’t the best fit for his son’s skillset.

“He wanted to go to a more wide open offense,” Tyrone Johnson said Thursday afternoon. “That was the only reason why.”

LSU has blocked Tyron from transferring to another SEC school, but his father said Tyron could play the 2016 season at a junior college with plans to return to the SEC in 2017. A decision could come in “the next week,” Tyrone told the paper.

LSU has a deep, talented crop of receivers. Johnson had been working with the freshmen and reserve receivers throughout camp, so the transfer shouldn’t be a blow for the Tigers’ offense.

Johnson is the third receiver to leave LSU this year. John Diarse and Trey Quinn both landed at Texas schools this offseason with Diarse headed to TCU and Quinn signing with SMU.
