Sabrina Ionescu leaves WNBA bubble to see specialist after ankle injury
After suffering a grade 3 ankle sprain in just her third outing with the New York Liberty, Sabrina Ionescu has left the bubble.
Ionescu, who the Liberty selected with the No. 1 overall pick earlier this summer, left the WNBA’s bubble at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, in order to see an ankle and foot specialist in New York, the team announced on Wednesday.
IONESCU INJURY UPDATE: New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, who exited last Friday’s game against the Atlanta Dream in the second quarter due to an ankle sprain, is traveling to New York on Wednesday, August 5 to see an ankle and foot specialist.

Ionescu to miss about a month
Ionescu went down after stepping on the foot of Dream guard Betnijah Laney while crossing half court in the second quarter of their 84-78 loss to Atlanta last Friday, and had to be helped off the court.

She had to be helped off the court, and did not return. She was diagnosed the next day with a grade 3 sprain, and was expected to miss about one month while recovering.
The team said on Saturday that they think her ankle can be treated non-surgically, which should allow her to return to the court faster.
It’s unclear how long Ionescu will be in New York working with the specialist. Once she’s ready to rejoin the team, however, she will have to quarantine for at least four days upon arrival to the WNBA’s bubble.
Ionescu was averaging 18 points, 7.7 assists and 7.3 rebounds in less than three games to kick off her WNBA career. She dropped 33 points against the Dallas Wings and shot an impressive 6-of-10 from behind the arc in that outing, too. The Liberty, however, have dropped all four of their games so far inside the bubble.
