Nets to retire Vince Carter's jersey on Jan. 25 at Barclays Center
The Brooklyn Nets are headed towards a rebuilding season as the franchise is hoping to find its next superstar through the Draft like so many teams hope to do in the NBA. While things may be bleak for the foreseeable future, Brooklyn is not forgetting that this season will involve celebrating one of its greatest players.
The Nets announced in a press release on Thursday that they will be retiring former Nets guard Vince Carter's number 15 jersey during a home matchup against the Miami Heat on Jan. 25. Once Carter's jersey is raised into the rafters of Barclays Center, he will be just the seventh player in franchise history to have such a honor bestowed upon him.
The other players that have had their jerseys raised to the rafters are: Drazen Petrovic (#3), Jason Kidd (#5), John Williamson (#23), Bill Melchionni (#25), Julius Erving (#32) and Charles “Buck” Williams (#52). This marks yet another incredible moment for Carter as later on this year, he will be enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2024 in October.
The Nets announced earlier this summer that Carter's jersey would be retired after plenty of years where Nets fans wondered if Carter would ever be given the honor given that the franchise hung up Kidd's jersey in October of 2013. With all of that being said, the Nets are finally doing right by a former great of the franchise by hanging his jersey in the rafters with the other players that he belongs next to.
