The Brooklyn Nets have just finished with the preseason portion of their 2024-25 NBA season and now, they set their sights on their season-opener at the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. Prior to their first game of the season on Oct. 23, Brooklyn still had some matters to address, including the extensions of certain players on their roster that ended up not happening.

On Monday, the deadline for extending players from the 2021 NBA Draft class eligible for rookie-scale extensions was at 6 PM ET. However, the deadline came and went without Brooklyn signing any of guard Cam Thomas, center Day'Ron Sharpe, and forward Ziaire Williams to their rookie-scale extensions, meaning that each will become restricted free-agents at the end of this season.

"There are several guys on our team that we could be having those same conversations with so we'll certainly engage with agents and with the players. I think it's important to always have that door open, the window will certainly close on the extension if we can't get something done," Nets general manager Sean Marks said during Media Day earlier this month.

The headliner for this topic is Thomas, a player that many expect to take another step forward this season after averaging a career-high 22.5 points per game last season. However, Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported on Monday that his sources had informed him that extension for Thomas, Sharpe, and Williams were not expected to happen by the deadline.

Earlier in the offseason, it was understood that the Nets would not be hasty about committing too much of their future money too soon given that teams have been able to maximize their cap space by waiting to extend certain players. As it looks right now, all three of those players will have to wait until next season to get their money, either from the Nets or another team.
